Your flight leaves Dulles at 6:40 am, you live in Ashburn, and the last thing you want at 4:45 is to open an app and watch the wait time climb. Book a taxi or car service the night before. From most of Ashburn, Dulles Airport is about 15 to 25 minutes away, and we also run the longer Loudoun trips into downtown DC and out to BWI, 24/7.

This guide is for Loudoun County: Ashburn, Brambleton, Lansdowne, Sterling, South Riding, Leesburg and Purcellville. It covers realistic drive times, which roads slow down and when, where to meet your driver, and how to get a fixed price before you leave.

The pattern worth knowing: the run to Dulles is short and fairly predictable at almost any hour. The run into the city is the one that swings. The same 35 miles can take under an hour on a Sunday morning and close to two hours on a wet Thursday evening.

Ashburn to Dulles: the short ride people under-plan

Because IAD is so close, a lot of Ashburn travelers leave the ride to the last minute. That works until it doesn't. Three things catch people out:

  • Early departures. Plenty of flights leave Dulles before 7 am, so the 4 to 5:30 am window is when you want a driver already assigned rather than hunting for one. Our guide to an early-morning taxi to Dulles covers the timing in more detail.

  • The toll road choice. From the west side of Ashburn, the Dulles Greenway is often the quickest way to the airport, but it's a toll road. Loudoun County Parkway and Route 28 are free and usually only a few minutes slower off-peak. If you have a preference, put it in the booking notes.

  • Which curb. Drop-off is on the upper departures level. Coming home, your driver meets you at arrivals; our Dulles Airport pickup guide shows exactly where to go after baggage claim.

What we'd do: if your flight is before 8 am, book the night before and include your flight number. For the ride home, a pre-booked pickup comes with flight tracking, so the driver adjusts if you land early or late. More on the airport side is on our page about the taxi to Washington Dulles Airport.

Ashburn, Reston and Herndon to downtown DC by car service

This is the trip where a car service earns its keep. Driving yourself means toll road fees, an hour or more of traffic and then paying to park downtown. The Silver Line now reaches Ashburn and it's a fair option if you're traveling light, but it's a long ride into the city with luggage, and trains don't run all night.

When to leave

  • Weekday mornings heading in: traffic on the Dulles Toll Road and I-66 builds from roughly 6:30 to 9:30 am. Leaving before 6:30 often saves a good 20 to 30 minutes.

  • Weekday afternoons heading home: the outbound crawl usually runs from about 3:30 to 7 pm, worst on Thursdays and Fridays.

  • Evenings and weekends: usually the easiest time, unless there's a game or a big event downtown.

What it costs

Book online to see a calculated fare for your exact addresses. If you'd rather lock in a flat rate, call 703-589-0846. For reference, our phone flat rate for downtown DC starts from $98 for 2 passengers and 2 bags, gratuity included. From farther out in Loudoun, the quote depends on your pickup address, so just ask when you call.

Loudoun to BWI: when Baltimore has the better flight

Sometimes the fare or the nonstop you need is at BWI, not Dulles. From Ashburn that's roughly 65 miles, and depending on the Beltway it can take anywhere from about 1 hour 15 minutes to well over 2 hours. That's a long drive to make yourself, then a parking bill, then the same drive tired on the way back.

  • Leave more buffer than feels necessary. For a morning BWI flight, assume the Beltway will be slow even if you leave early.

  • Book ahead. Long trips need a car and driver lined up in advance, especially before 6 am.

  • Coming home? Give us your flight number so the BWI pickup is timed to when you actually land, not when you were scheduled to.

We pick up across Maryland too; see our Maryland service page if your trip starts on that side.

Where to meet your driver in Ashburn and nearby

Most pickups are simply at your front door. A few local notes that save a phone call:

  • Townhouse rows and gated communities: add the gate code or a landmark (the cross street, the end unit's number) in the booking notes.

  • One Loudoun, Brambleton Town Center or the Ashburn Metro station: name a specific spot, such as a storefront or the station's drop-off area, so the driver isn't circling a parking lot.

  • Offices and data center campuses along Loudoun County Parkway and Route 28: tell us which building and entrance. Many campuses have more than one gate.

  • Hotels: we meet you at the main lobby entrance unless you tell us otherwise.

Not sure we cover your street? Check our service locations.

Families, groups and extra bags

A lot of Loudoun trips are whole households flying out together, and that changes what you need from the car.

  • Child car seats are available for $9 each. Ask when you book so the right seat is in the car; details are on our car seats and SUVs page.

  • Groups and big luggage loads: we have vans for up to 15 passengers, useful for a team heading to a conference or a family trip. See our Dulles Airport shuttle page for group options.

  • Paying for the ride: our payment methods page lists what we accept. Ask for a receipt if the trip goes on an expense report.

Taxi, car service or rideshare from Ashburn?

All three will get you to Dulles. The difference shows up at 4:30 am, on a long trip, or when you need a car seat. A pre-booked car service gives you the price before you leave, a driver assigned in advance, flight tracking for the ride home, and the option of a car seat or a van. Rideshare can be fine for a quick midday hop, but pricing moves with demand and you won't know who's coming until you request.

For the longer comparison, read what a flat-rate, pre-booked car service actually gets you. Everything else about us, including our 4.8★ Google rating, is on the Dulles Taxi Service home page.
