Car Service from Dulles Airport: Drive Times by Destination

A car service from Dulles Airport means a driver is assigned to your flight before you land, watches the real arrival time, and takes you door to door at a price you know before you get in. From IAD, most rides home to Herndon, Reston, Sterling or Ashburn take 15 to 30 minutes. Downtown DC, Tysons at rush hour and BWI are the long ones, and those are the trips where booking ahead pays off.

Below is what each ride actually looks like, from the moment your wheels touch down to the moment you're at your front door.

The first 40 minutes after you land

Most people think the ride starts at the curb. At Dulles it really starts at the gate, and the gap between the two is where travelers lose time and patience.

  • Carry-on only, domestic flight: roughly 15 to 25 minutes from gate to curb. Most gates are out in the midfield concourses, so you ride the AeroTrain or a mobile lounge back to the Main Terminal first.

  • Checked bags: add another 15 to 30 minutes at baggage claim, longer when several big flights land at once.

  • International arrival: plan on 30 to 60 minutes for U.S. Customs, sometimes more on a busy evening.

That's why we ask for your flight number, not just a time. Your driver follows the actual landing, so an early arrival or a two-hour delay doesn't leave anyone guessing. Text when you have your bags and you'll get the exact door and curb back. The door-by-door layout of arrivals is in our Dulles Airport pickup guide.

Drive times from IAD by destination (approximate)

These are typical times we see on rides out of Dulles. Treat them as estimates: a crash on the Beltway, a snowy evening or a holiday Friday changes all of them.

The pattern worth knowing: rides west and north into Loudoun stay fairly predictable at most hours. Rides east toward Tysons and the city are the ones that swing, especially on weekday evenings from about 3:30 to 7 pm.

Where each ride goes, and what to tell us when you book

Reston and Herndon

These are the shortest and most common rides out of IAD. For Reston, drivers usually run a few exits east on the Dulles Toll Road and come off at Reston Parkway or Wiehle Avenue. Herndon is a quick hop via Route 28 or Centreville Road.

What helps us most: if you're going to an office or a hotel around Reston Town Center rather than a house, put the building name or garage entrance in your booking notes. Those blocks have a lot of one-way streets, and a named entrance saves a lap.

Loudoun County: Sterling, Ashburn, South Riding, Leesburg

Route 28 north handles Sterling and the Route 7 corridor. For Brambleton, the west side of Ashburn and Leesburg, the Dulles Greenway is the fast way, but it's a toll road, so if route matters to you, mention it when you call for a flat rate. South Riding is a short run down Route 28 toward Route 50. Purcellville and western Loudoun add roughly another 20 minutes past Leesburg.

Townhouse rows and gated communities are the usual snag out here. Add the gate code, the cross street or the end-unit number to your booking. If you live in Loudoun, our Ashburn car service guide covers the trip in the other direction too, including early flights out.

Tysons, Fairfax and Chantilly

Tysons looks close on a map and feels far at 5 pm. The highway part goes quickly; the last couple of miles on Route 7 or Route 123 are where the time goes. Chantilly and Centreville are the opposite: a few minutes down Route 28 and one of the easiest rides out of the airport.

Downtown DC

Into the city is the trip where a car service earns its fare. It's about 26 miles, roughly 35 to 45 minutes late at night or midday, and an hour or more in evening traffic. Two things make it smoother: give us the exact address (many downtown hotels have a side or garage entrance where it's easier to stop), and lock in a flat rate by phone. Our downtown DC flat rate by phone starts from $98 for 2 passengers and 2 bags, gratuity included.

Our Washington, D.C. taxi page shows the parts of the city we cover, and the Dulles to downtown DC guide compares the meter, rideshare and Metro on that one route.

BWI and Maryland

Sometimes you land at Dulles and the next stop is Baltimore: a connection at BWI, a hotel near the airport, or home somewhere in Maryland. It's a long ride, usually well over an hour around the Beltway, and it's exactly the kind of trip you don't want to piece together at the curb at 11 pm. Book it ahead with your flight number and we'll handle it like any other pickup.

Car service, taxi line or rideshare from Dulles?

All three will get you out of the airport. What's different is what happens when your flight is late, when it's 1 am, or when you're standing there with four bags and two kids.

  • The taxi line. The airport's official taxi line is on the arrivals level and runs around the clock. You pay the meter plus airport fees, so a long ride in heavy traffic costs more. Here's how Washington Flyer taxi rates work.

  • Rideshare. Fine for a short ride on a quiet afternoon. The catches are surge pricing when several flights land together, drivers who cancel, and the walk to the third curb with your luggage.

  • Pre-booked car service. A driver is assigned before you land, the flight is tracked, and the price is settled before the ride. It matters most on long rides, late arrivals and anything with kids or a lot of bags.

What we'd do: for anything past Tysons, or any landing after 10 pm, book ahead. For a ten-minute ride to Herndon on a Tuesday afternoon, any of the three will do.

A short checklist before you book

  • Your flight number, so the driver tracks the real landing time.

  • The exact drop-off address, plus a gate code, hotel entrance or building name if there is one.

  • How many people and how many bags, so the right size car shows up.

  • Car seats if you need them. They're $9 each; tell us the ages and see the options on our car seats and SUVs page.

  • Group size. For teams, wedding parties or big families, we have vans for up to 15 passengers; see our Dulles Airport shuttle page.

Is there a car service from Dulles to DC?

Your driver texts you the exact door and curb once you land. Send a message when you have your bags, not when you reach the gate, since you still have the train ride and possibly customs ahead.
