Dulles Airport Pickup & Drop-Off Guide (2026): Where to Meet Your Taxi, Uber or Car Service at IAD

Updated: Oct 1

Your flight lands at Dulles at 11:40 p.m. You clear customs, grab your bags, walk out the doors, and... which curb? Door 2 or door 6? Is your Uber on the first curb or the third? And why is your brother-in-law circling the airport for the fourth time?
Dulles (IAD) is a big airport with a confusing arrivals area. Different kinds of rides pick up in different places, and knowing where yours is can save you 20 minutes and a lot of stress. We do these pickups every day, so here's the simple version. (If you're still deciding how to get to or from the airport at all, start with our Dulles airport transportation guide.)
The quick answer
Uber / Lyft: Ground level outside Baggage Claim, 3rd curb, via Doors 2, 4 or 6. The app assigns a zone (3A–3H).
Washington Flyer taxi (taxi line): Arrivals level, down the ramp at Doors 2 or 6
Shared vans: 2nd curb, zones 2A and 2H
Friend or family picking you up: Outside the Main Terminal on the Arrivals Level
Pre-booked taxi or car service (like us): Your driver confirms the exact door and curb by text when you land

Step by step: getting from your gate to your ride
Take the train or mobile lounge to the Main Terminal. Most gates at Dulles are in the midfield concourses, so you'll ride the AeroTrain or a "mobile lounge" (the giant bus-like vehicles) back to the main building.
Flying in from abroad? You'll go through U.S. Customs in the Main Terminal. It's on the Arrivals Level near Baggage Claim 14. (Dulles FAQ) Customs lines can add 20–60+ minutes, so it helps to have a driver who tracks your flight.
Collect your bags on the lower (Arrivals) level.
Head out the right door for your ride, using the guide above.
Picking someone up? Use the free cell phone lot
If you're meeting a friend or family member, don't circle the terminal. Police won't let you wait at the curb.
The Dulles Cell Phone Lot is on Autopilot Drive. From the Dulles Access Road or Toll Road, take the SERVICES exit, follow Aviation Drive to the light at Autopilot Drive, and turn right. It's free for up to one hour. There are no restrooms, and you can't leave the car unattended. (Dulles Cell Phone Lot)
The routine that works: your traveler collects their bags, walks outside, then calls you with their door number and level. You leave the lot and pick them up. Leave once they have their bags, not the moment the plane lands, or you'll end up circling.
Uber vs. taxi line vs. pre-booked ride: which is easiest?
Uber and Lyft work fine most of the time. The catches are surge pricing when lots of flights land at once, drivers who cancel, and the walk out to the 3rd curb with your bags. Late at night, waits can get long. (We compare prices in detail in our Taxi vs. Uber to Dulles Airport guide.)
The taxi line is run by the airport's official taxi operator. It's there around the clock, and you pay the meter plus airport fees. If you want to know what that costs, see our breakdown of Washington Flyer taxi rates.
A pre-booked IAD taxi or IAD airport car service usually costs about the same as the taxi line or less, and it's the easiest option after a long flight:
You know the price before you land. No meter, no surge.
Your driver tracks your flight. If you land early or late, they adjust.
Help with luggage, plus infant and toddler car seats on request ($9 each)
Room for groups: SUVs, minivans and a 15-passenger Dulles airport shuttle for families and teams
Landing late at night? Read this
Plenty of Dulles flights land after 10 p.m., especially from the West Coast, and plenty of international flights arrive early in the morning. These are the hours when rideshare gets unpredictable.
Are taxis available 24/7 at Dulles, including late-night arrivals? Yes. The airport says its taxi line runs 24 hours a day. (Dulles FAQ) Our pre-booked Dulles airport taxi service also runs 24/7, including 3 a.m. pickups. The difference is that with us, a driver is already assigned and waiting for your flight, so you're not hoping for one when you walk out.
A night we see all the time: A flight from Los Angeles is due at 11:15 p.m. By 10 it's showing a 90-minute delay. The rideshare app will look for a driver when you land, maybe. Our driver just watches the flight, adjusts, and is waiting when the passenger walks out at 12:52 a.m. No texts, no "where are you," no surge.
Tips that save time at Dulles pickup
Text your driver when you're at baggage claim, not at the gate. You still have a train ride and possibly customs to go.
Take a photo of the door number you're standing at. It makes meeting up much faster.
International arrivals: plan for 30–60 minutes between landing and the curb.
Going to DC, Maryland or Reagan National? Book ahead. Longer trips are where a flat rate saves the most. We run rides between Dulles and Washington, DC and to and from Maryland, and if you need to change airports, see our guide to getting from Dulles to Reagan National.
Dropping off at Dulles (IAD departures)
Flying out instead of in? Drop-offs work differently from pickups.
Departures level: Cars dropping off passengers pull up to the curb on the Departures level of the Main Terminal, near your airline's check-in doors. It's drop-off only; you can't park or leave the car at the curb.
Uber and Lyft: Rideshare drop-offs happen on the ground level at curbs 3A/B and 3G/H, with a short walk inside to the escalators up to ticketing.
Pre-booked taxi or car service: Your driver drops you at the Departures level, as close to your airline as the curb allows. For home pickups, your driver calls and texts 45 minutes before arriving.
