Dulles Airport Shuttle in 2026: Every Option Compared (and When a Shuttle Isn't the Answer)

A lot of travelers search for a "Dulles Airport shuttle" or an "IAD airport shuttle" expecting the big blue shared vans that used to line the curb. Here's the catch: that model has mostly disappeared. SuperShuttle, the best-known shared-ride brand, shut down its U.S. service at the end of 2019, and the old express bus to Wiehle-Reston no longer runs now that Metro trains reach the airport.

So what is a shuttle at Dulles today? There are really three choices: the Metro, a private shuttle van, or a door-to-door taxi. Here's how to pick.

The 2026 Dulles shuttle options at a glance

Option 1: The Metro Silver Line

Traveler with one carry-on bag on the Washington Metro Silver Line platform

The Dulles Airport Metro station opened in November 2022. From baggage claim, follow signs to the underground walkway. It's about a 10-minute walk with moving sidewalks.

The Silver Line runs through Reston, Tysons, Rosslyn and downtown DC. Expect about an hour to the center of the city.

Good if: you're traveling alone, have one bag, and your hotel is near a Silver Line stop.

Skip it if: you have kids, car seats, three suitcases, or you land late at night.

Option 2: Hotel shuttles

Many hotels near Dulles in Herndon, Sterling and Chantilly run free shuttles. Call the hotel before you fly; schedules change and many don't run overnight.

Good if: you're staying one night near the airport for an early flight.

Option 3: A private Sprinter shuttle for groups

This is what most people actually want when they type "Dulles airport shuttle service" or "IAD shuttle service": one vehicle, one group, everyone's luggage, no stops for strangers.

You pay one flat rate for the vehicle, so split across a group it often costs less per person than individual taxis. Read more about booking a Sprinter shuttle for large groups or see our Dulles Airport shuttle page.

Option 4: Taxi or private car (the "shuttle" for 1–4 people)

For a small group, a taxi beats any shuttle on time. No waiting for other passengers, no extra stops, straight to your door.

Need car seats or room for golf clubs and strollers? We have SUVs and child car seats ready.

Going into the city? See Taxi from Dulles to Downtown DC for fares and drive times.

How to choose in 10 seconds

  • 1 person, 1 bag, daytime: Metro.

  • Staying at an airport hotel: Hotel shuttle.

  • 1–4 people with luggage: Taxi with a flat rate.

  • 5+ people or lots of gear: Private Sprinter shuttle.

  • Catching a flight at the other airport: Taxi. Don't gamble a connection on a transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a shared shuttle at Dulles Airport?

Not like there used to be. The big shared-van brands have mostly left. Most travelers now choose Metro, a hotel shuttle, or a private ride.

Is there an IAD to DCA shuttle, or a DCA to IAD shuttle?

There's no dedicated shuttle bus between the two airports. Metro takes a transfer at Rosslyn, and a taxi usually takes 40 to 60 minutes. Our Dulles to Reagan National guide compares every option.

How much is a private shuttle from Dulles?

A private van is priced per vehicle, not per person. See your fare instantly on our booking page, or call or text 703-589-0846 for a flat rate. The flat rate depends on your group size and how much luggage you're bringing.
